Essential Oils and Himalayan Sea Salt For Seasonal Allergy Relief

Spring has Sprung here in the foothills of the Pocono Mountains. Daffodils and forsythia are in bloom. The trees are budding and the grass is turning green. My black car is lightly covered more each day with a fine yellow-green pollen film. These telltale signs of Spring mean that people with seasonal allergies are beginning to feel the not-so-great effects.

An allergy is an overreaction of our immune system to certain substances such as dust, pollen, animal fur, synthetic materials, or foods. Seasonal allergies can cause, sneezing, congestion or a runny nose, a headache, a scratchy throat, a cough, post nasal drip, brain fog, and itchy watery eyes. Any combination of these symptoms can make you feel miserable.

Thankfully, several pure essential oils combined with Himalayan sea salt or naturally derived peppermint menthol, serve as a natural way to ease the symptoms and discomfort associated with seasonal allergies.

Lavender essential oil is a natural antihistamine and possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties to relieve most allergic reactions. Not only will it soothe your allergic reaction, but it also has a calming and relaxing effect on your body and mind and smells great.

Peppermint essential oil has a strong, fresh, and minty aroma that works wonders to soothe allergic reactions, especially those that cause respiratory. Peppermint essential oil has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties that are great for soothing allergies. It also helps to open the airways, easing congestion and improving your breathing.

Lemon essential oil works as a natural antihistamine and helps to thin excess mucus and calms down the inflammation which is the result of an allergic reaction. It is said to kill bacteria and eliminate allergy triggers in the air.

Eucalyptus essential oil naturally opens up the sinuses, nasal, and bronchial passages. It helps to thin mucus and reduce mucus production. Eucalyptus essential oil produces a cooling sensation in the nose, calming inflammation which helps to improve airflow.

Himalayan sea salt is said to kill invading cells by osmosis. The process of osmosis destroys the cells' structure, resulting in their death. Sea salt also naturally reduces moisture in the air allowing for a fresher breath of air in each inhale. Halotherapy, salt therapy, was discovered in the 1800s by Polish miners who noticed their exposure to salt mines yielded positive results in their respiratory health and skin health.

Inhalation is the most direct and beneficial way to use pure essential oils and Himalayan sea salt to alleviate seasonal allergy symptoms. You can use a personal aromatherapy nasal inhaler, a mist room diffuser, and an aromatherapy menthol shower steamer to naturally relieve allergy symptoms.

Naturally derived peppermint menthol affects the mucus receptors in the nose, helping to open the airways and clear mucus. The natural cooling sensation helps you to breathe through your nose easier.

I developed allergies much later in life and always carry two aromatherapy inhalers with me. One contains Lavender, Peppermint, and Lemon pure essential oils combined with Himalayan sea salt. The other inhaler contains straight Eucalyptus essential oil and sea salt. We always have a jar full of essential oil and menthol aromatherapy shower steamers on hand in the main bathroom. A shower steamer elevates a simple shower to a spa-like aromatherapy experience.

Please consult with your veterinarian before diffusing essential oils with pets present. Especially cats. They lack a crucial liver enzyme that metabolizes essential oils.

What pure essential oils do you use for natural seasonal allergy relief? Which is your preferred natural method of use?
